Joe Michell School Policy Summaries

Academic Integrity

It is the mission of Joe Michell School to inspire and empower compassionate global citizens who understand, appreciate, and respect diverse perspectives, creating positive change. It is our vision that, through the learner-centered model of the PYP and MYP, all students are learning in an environment that is fair and respectful. Therefore, we take a strong line on academic integrity, and we explicitly teach students the skills and understanding of good academic practice. Students, teachers, specialists, school administration, and parents work together to develop a culture of academic integrity.

Access and Admissions

As a public, neighborhood school, we are committed to serving all students. The programmes at Joe Michell are designed to be inclusive of all students, regardless of interest and ability. The primary language of instruction is English, and students receive additional language instruction in Spanish (TK-8th). Throughout their IB journey, students receive differentiated instruction and support from their classroom teachers, specialists (Music, PE, Library, Language), and additional staff, as needed or determined by a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504.

Assessment

The purpose of assessment is to guide instruction and provide students with an opportunity to receive feedback and reflect on their own learning. Assessment should be authentic and relevant, and developed alongside the implementation of the curriculum, formatted in a manner that allows for all learners to succeed. We use assessment to foster a learning culture that allows for students and teachers to grow as compassionate global citizens. Teachers work closely in their grade-levels and subject areas to create curriculum, design assessment tasks, and analyze assessment data.

Inclusive Education

We challenge and inspire each other to love learning and create a better world. It is our vision that, through the learner-centered model of the PYP and MYP, along with the district continuum of services, all students are provided with the necessary access, resources, supports, and differentiation to allow them to contribute and thrive in a changing world and reach their highest level of personal success. Therefore, inclusion is an ongoing process that aims to increase access and engagement in learning for all students by identifying and removing barriers.

Language

The foundation of all learning is through language. As we empower compassionate global citizens to be critical and reflective thinkers, risk-takers and communicators, we support language development in each student as they make sense of their experiences and construct meaning. By honoring students’ unique backgrounds in all stages of language acquisition, students have the opportunity to engage in authentic and meaningful inquiry-based learning experiences. We foster language development in all classes.
